About the Probability Simulation Programs
The context in which the programs are related stem from the MEP lesson plans and practice book material for the Primary Course. These programs have been designed in order to allow teachers and students to simulate probability experiments over a long period of trials. The number of trials, n, for each experiment can be changed as desired and the relative frequency of each outcome is also calculated. The programs calculate the outcomes in a matter of seconds which allows the experiments to be repeated in full a number of times quickly. Each program follows the same basic set up. Decide how many times you want the experiment to be conducted and type it in as your value of n. Then simply click "go" and the program does the rest. If you want to see the relative frequency for each event, just click the red area labelled relative frequency to reveal it. The relative frequencies will then be automatically hidden again for the results of the next simulation.
Unfortunately, these programs will only work with a fairly up to date version of Java. If you find the programs do not work on your machine then you can click here to download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
Program 1 - Marbles in a Bag (Y5Lp_131_5)
This program simulates the outcomes for when one marble is selected at random from a bag containing 4 white marbles, 1 red and 5 blue. The marble is replaced each time after selection.

Program 2 - Generalisation of Marbles in a Bag (Y5Lp_131_5g)
This program does exactly the same as program 1 above, except that it allows you to generalise the contents of the bag. To do this click on "generalise" and then select the colour and number of each type of marble that you want in the bag. The program then simulates the experiment with your chosen contents.
